Samuel Clemens grew up in Hannibal, Missouri, a riverfront town on the Mississippi. As a boy Clemens often climbed trees and explored caves, spending many hours playing in a nearby cave that was known as Simms Cave, now the Mark Twain Cave.
As a boy, Samuel Clemens (Mark Twain) was in Hannibal from 1839 to 1853 and often played in the nearby caves, which influenced his stories. The Mark Twain Cave Bur Oak, known as the Liberty Tree Bur Oak, still grows just outside the Mark Twain Cave. This special heritage tree was a seedling in 1721.
The George Washington Sycamore grows at Mount Vernon, an American landmark and an enduring tribute to the Father of Our Country. These trees grew from a seed taken from a selected Sycamore, collected by the Director of Horticulture at Mount Vernon in 2014.
Moon Trees came about through the work of Astronaut Stuart Roosa who was allowed to carry tree seeds with him into space. Mississippi State University proudly displays its Sycamore Moon Tree on campus near the Davis Wade Stadium at Scott Field, the home playing venue for the Mississippi State Bulldogs football team
