Helen Keller Birthplace Foundation

Helen Keller loved exploring the grounds of Ivy Green and often spoke and wrote of her favorite trees. One of Helen Keller’s favorite trees was a Water Oak, currently over 200 years old, which she often spoke and wrote. It is a deciduous tree, growing to 100 ft. tall with a trunk up to 3 ft. in diameter.

The Birthing Tree is steeped in local folklore. The huge oak was a well-known meeting place for weary travelers on their way to Southern Alabama. While waiting at this tree, many babies were born at the tree due to the extended delays.
